On Labor Day, 12:30 p.m. down Providence Road, Bus 14 was standing room only. Find bus schedules at http://ridetransit.org. $2 for regular fare. Beats paying to park. Will riding the city bus this week result in bump in CATS ridership?

#theppl #Dnc2012 gearing up

We ventured to uptown Charlotte on Sunday afternoon and the police forces looked as if they outnumbered the protest parade - at least by 3 p.m. they did. We saw officers from Atlanta, Chatham County (N.C. - home of Pittsboro and Siler City) and Greenville, S.C. There was a phalanx of bicycle officers all in black, with helmets. I mistook them, at first, for a crew of anarchists.

Charlotte is buying a dead shopping mall - Eastland Mall.  So what should it do with it? PlanCharlotte.org offers ideas from other cities’ dead mall re-dos. (Shown above: One idea from a 2007 Urban Land Institute study of Eastland, which called for a mixed-use neighborhood on the site.)

This presentation ate many hours this week. Keihly Moore, who pulled it together, did a wonderful job.

Dubai 2000 and 2010:

One of the best examples of the instant megacity, Dubai has changed dramatically since oil was discovered there in the 1960s. The change over just the past decade has been incredible.
